A Luxury Scottish Staycation

I love to travel. Who doesn't? The lure of far off lands, interesting cultures and better climates is great. It is easy to forget, however, that there is often much exploring to be done at home in your own country too. Which is exactly what staycations were made for.

staycation noun, informal :
a holiday spent in one's home country rather than abroad

Intent on embracing the staycation I grabbed a couple of blogging besties, overpacked a case and hopped on a train bound for the Scottish capital. Edinburgh was the perfect choice for a mini break for Chantelle (Girl In The Tartan Scarf), Lyndsey (The Quiet Resolution) and I since we can get there in under an hour. Plus I don't know about the girls but I always feel like, having lived in Scotland my entire life, I've not really spent much time exploring our capital city.

Where we stayed

Hidden away in one of Old Town Edinburgh's many quirky, cobbled closes is a cluster of 50 unbelievably luxurious serviced apartments. We could not have chosen a better base for our indulgent girls trip than Old Town Chambers by Lateral City Apartments. The eclectic group of buildings that host the apartments, including a 15th century town house, have all been impeccably renovated. Boasting original features such as exposed brick work and gabled ceilings coupled perfectly with luxurious 21st century comforts.

The three bedroom penthouse we got to call home for the night though, was something else. The four balconies (indeed, there were more balconies than people on this trip) had unbeatable views over Edinburgh. The interior was utter perfection. Every room was modern and chic with touches of traditional Scottish tweed. Plus it was a tech lovers dream with state of the art everything - brand spanking new TVs, integrated Bose sound system and even the curtains opened at the touch of a button. The kitchen was fully kitted out with everything we could have possibly needed. A particular highlight for me was a Nespresso machine with capsules provided at no extra charge (halle-freakin-lujah, can't even count the number of times I've stayed somewhere with a Nespresso machine and had to pay more than a flipping grande at Starbs for one capsule). Heck there was even a separate wine fridge. Can I move in forever please?

Making ourselves at home

One final gush about the apartment - the bedrooms! They were heavenly. Each of them had dreamy king size beds and their own bathroom stocked with gorgeous Cowshed toiletries. I felt like millennial royalty as I lounged around my bedroom reading hipster magazines, toting a faceful of my favourite face mask, sipping on Prosecco. Of course I rounded it all off by sliding into that standalone bath. The beauty of staying at serviced apartments is that you can really make yourself feel at home in a way that's not really possible in a hotel.

What we got up to

Since the theme of the trip was luxury I thought it would be apt to start it with some pampering. So after we dropped our luggage (Old Town Chambers is so convenient for Edinburgh Waverley station - literally a two minute walk) I nipped off to a new treatment space called The Method for the most incredible facial of my life. Such a refreshing and relaxing start to my staycation. Then since it was such a gorgeous autumn day we spent some time perusing Edinburgh's shopping scene and hunting down the cutest coffee shops. A few of my favourites that were right on the doorstep of OTC were The Milkman and Brewhemia (also fab for drinks). Advocates Close, where the apartment is tucked away, is right off Cockburn street which is home to lots of lovely independent shops if you're looking for a change from the classic high street offerings.

After some wandering it was definitely time to head back to our penthouse - it was so amazing there that we basically didn't want to leave.

What we ate

No luxury staycation would be complete without copious amounts of delicious food. Since, as I mentioned, the girls and I weren't that keen to spend too much time away from our temporary home we made a unanimous decision to just have a night in relaxing, chatting and of course having one or two (or several) drinks. Bliss.

Old Town Chambers have partnered with the highly acclaimed Scottish Delicatessen Valvona and Crolla to offer a food box service for exactly this reason. There are two options,

- Breakfast box with fine cheese, Italian meats, juice, bread, fruit and muesli
- Quiet night in box with cheese, Italian meats, olives, oatcakes and wine.

Each of the box options serve two people and are priced at £29 per box. We opted for the quiet night in box of course and it was absolutely perfect. I'm a huge fan of an antipasti board and this was so easy. It was waiting for us in the fridge when we arrived so everything was chilled and all we had to do was unbox it and scoff it. And boy did we scoff it.

Since we're a teeny bit greedy and because you can't have a staycation without some local gin we also had an extra little treat. A gin hamper from nearby Cranachan & Crowdie filled with amazing Scottish treats all created by Scottish women. We added some cheese sabl├ęs (tiny cheesy biscuits) to our already overflowing cheese board, nibbled on Charlotte Flower Chocolates for pudding and washed it all down with some amazing Lilliard gin and tonic.

The store is on the Royal Mile - just an 8 minute walk from the apartments and I highly recommend you check it out if  you're ever in Edinburgh. They stock carefully selected Scottish, gifts, food and alcohol. As a major gin enthusiast I know it can be a bit of a mission to find craft gins, like the Lilliard gin we were sipping on, in the supermarket so I love stores like Cranachan & Crowdie for hunting out new brands I haven't tried yet. I know where I'll be starting with my Christmas shopping this year.

Are you hungry and jealous yet? Me too. I couldn't have imagined a better staycation and I'll definitely be popping back to Edinburgh for another one soon. Thank you so much to Lateral City Apartments for having us and thank you to Chantelle and Lyndsey for being the best staycation buddies a gal could ask for. Don't forget to check out their blogs for more pictures of this drool worthy penthouse.
